Dark Howl: Inerasable Curse

:iconarlo-arleh: as Dark Howl.

Photography by :iconsorceressmoonblader: our gorgeous photographer who had to handle road blocks to get there after a 1.5 hour drive and also Arleh's stupidity in FORGETTING HER WINGS the first time around. Bless your buddha-like patience.

Edited by :iconalita-b-angel:

About the Costume:

Made in June 2009 by ~arlo-arleh who really wanted to try her hand articulated wings. They're really quite a feat of engineering, they could fold in and out, and we've since used it in several costumes, including my Sephiroth costume here. They were made with a backpack support frame which we would detach and use with other costumes.

We did a combo team of Dark Howl/Normal Howl originally for Supanova 2009 and won Runner Up Best Skit.

The body suit was made from long hair 7cm fur which was ridiculously expensive at around $70 per metre, which she then cut into the feathery shapes. She had proper claws on fingers and feet too.

The wig was styled from the same feathers as the wing, and all together we lovingly called her the Giant Chicken when she actually walked around in it look hilarious in a children's park.

We even had the awesome matching necklace jewellery!

Check out a step by step of how she made the costume here at our joint live journal Battle Arleh Productions:

The Edit:

Quick 2 hour edit. I FINALLY GOT AROUND TO POSTING THIS AWESOME PICTURE OMG. It's been MORE THAN A YEAR since the shoot. I have such a backlog...JFC.

Most of it was a super colour-grade to make Arleh's costume pop.

I just like the little Calcifer I added :)

One day we might stop cosplaying Ghibli but we're well on the way to making a costume for EVERY GHIBLI FILM. Yikes.

If you love Ghibli as much as us, please check out also our Spirited Away Cosplay Over Here

Do you know what kind of wood was used for the framework of the wings? And where exactly were the metal rods inserted into the backpack? Because I'm trying to picture it in my mind but I don't know where exactly they would go. Awesome job, by the way. C:

Sorry for the mega late reply, the only tutorial we watched was this one [link]

Balsa was too thin, so we used a thin oak. We just nailed in pipe holders on the backpack from the plumbing section of any hardware store, to fit the rods we bent for the wings.

Hope that helps (though late)

I'm astounded at the amount of effort that must've gone into the creation of this costume. Where on earth did you manage to procure so many feathers?!
